Belarusian Party of Left fails to get permission for series of demonstrations in Homyel
Activists of the Spravedlivy Mir (Just World) Belarusian Party of the Left (BPL) have failed to secure permission for a series of demonstrations in Homyel after the city’s police refused to send officers to the events.
The organizers of all demonstrations in Belarus are required to sign a contract with the police to secure the presence of police officers at the venue.
The Homyel regional chapter of the BPL planned to stage the demonstrations on September 24, 25 and 26 to promote the opposition party’s platform, but the police said that there would not be enough available personnel on the dates to police the events, Uladzimir Syakerka, the chapter’s leader, told BelaPAN.
“Even one police officer would be enough for us,” Mr. Syakerka told BelaPAN. “But the police have proved unable to send even one officer. What do we pay our taxes for?”
The most recent opposition demonstration sanctioned by the city authorities took place in Homyel in 2004.
