Lukashenka suggests that CIS countries should help Tajikistan guard its border with Afghanistan

It is important for all CIS countries to enhance security at Tajikistan's border with Afghanistan, Alyaksandr Lukashenka said while meeting with CIS media leaders in Minsk on Monday.

Mr. Lukashenka said that if Tajik President Emomali Rahmon decided to raise this issue during a CIS summit to be held in Minsk on Friday, Belarus would support him.

He suggested that the CIS should discuss the security threats at the Tajik border and make some decisions aimed at addressing them.

Mr. Lukashenka noted that the presidents of the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization had agreed during a recent summit in Russia's Sochi to devise a set of measures to help Tajikistan beef up security at the shared border with Afghanistan. He noted that the vulnerability of the border was a common problem for the CIS countries, and that migration flows from that region went through Belarus.

Mr. Lukashenka predicted that the threat of terrorism fueled by tensions in Afghanistan would grow. //BelaPAN
