Belarusian Popular Front chairman registered as candidate in Minsk City Soviet elections

Alyaksey Yanukevich, chairman of the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF), has been registered as a candidate in the Minsk City Soviet elections.

As Mr. Yanukevich told BelaPAN on Thursday afternoon, half of the 80 BPF representatives who were nominated for registration as candidates in the March 23 local elections have been registered, whereas three members of the party are known to have been denied registration.

"The BPF is actively participating in this election campaign, but we do not consider it to be a true election campaign,” Mr. Yanukevich said. "This is proved by the fact that a lot of our representatives were denied membership in election commissions and thus prevented from monitoring the counting of votes. However, the BPF is using this election campaign to spread information about political alternatives and national and democratic values."

Syarhey Kalyakin, leader of the Spravedlivy Mir (Just World) Belarusian Party of the Left, has also been registered as a candidate in the Minsk City Soviet elections.
