Belarusians of North America hold conference in New York

Belarusian emigrants living in North America held a traditional conference in New York on August 30 and 31.

Representatives of organizations based in New York, New Jersey, Miami, Chicago and Washington as well as representatives of the Belarusian Canadian Alliance participated in the event, according to the Belarusan-American Association.

On August 30, the delegates celebrated the 23rd anniversary of the adoption of a bill that gave Belarus’ Declaration of State Sovereignty the status of a constitutional law. In attendance were Ivonka Survilla, the Canadian-based president of the government in exile of the Belarusian National Republic (BNR); Hanna Surmach, leader of the Main Council of the Belarusan-American Association; Valyantsina Shawchenka, leader of the Belarusian Canadian Alliance; and Syarhey Navumchyk, a member of Belarus’ Supreme Soviet (parliament), who voted for the declaration on July 27, 1990.
