Belarus restoring diplomatic representation in Czech Republic to level of ambassador

Belarus is restoring its diplomatic representation in the Czech Republic to the level of ambassador after an eight-year break, BelaPAN reports.

Ambassador Vasil Markovich will present his credentials to Czech President Vaclav Klaus on September 30, according to the Czech Republic's CTK news agency.

Mr. Markovich, who was appointed ambassador earlier this month, has headed the Belarusian diplomatic mission in Prague since 2006.

Belarus and the Czech Republic recalled its ambassadors from the other country after the latter denied Alyaksandr Lukashenka a visa to travel to Prague for a NATO summit in 2002.

Jiri Karas, head of the Czech embassy in Minsk, was promoted from charge d’affaires to ambassador in August 2009.
