Polish foreign ministry dismisses Minsk’s allegations of Poland’s involvement in plot to overthrow Belarusian government as absurd

The Belarusian ambassador to Warsaw, Viktar Haysyonak, was summoned to the Polish foreign ministry on Friday to be told that the Polish government viewed Minsk’s allegations of Poland’s involvement in a plot to overthrow the Belarusian government as absurd.

On January 14, Belarus’ largest government newspaper Sovetskaya Belorussiya began publishing articles under the headline, “Behind the Scenes of a Plot. Officially Declassified Evidence of the Events of December 19.”

The daily, which is a publication of the Presidential Administration, accused Western countries, Germany and Poland in particular, of sponsoring opposition groups in Belarus and plotting a “color revolution” in the country, which would bring a puppet leader to power.

"It is beyond any doubt that the secret services of, in the first instance, Poland and Germany, which planned and organized the `Tell the Truth!` campaign that was meant to become a new opposition force capable of changing the government in the country, had a hand in the December 19 events," the paper said. "Poland became a training ground for the organizational creation of a force capable of changing the legitimate government in Belarus. Special and training camps for ‘activists’ were set up there. A new ruling class was trained there and major foreign-policy decisions were discussed with diplomats there. All this is deplorable, at least because the brotherly people of Poland have extremely close ties with the Belarusian people. It’s pity that certain politicians don’t want to understand this."

According to Sovetskaya Belorussiya, the “Tell the Truth!” campaign, which was led by former presidential candidate Uladzimir Nyaklyayew, was sponsored by “representatives” of the Polish foreign ministry.

On Saturday, the first portion of “Behind the Scenes of a Plot” was republished by two other major government newspapers, Respublika and Zvyazda. //BelaPAN
