Speaker of US House of Representatives meets with Belarusian opposition activists
John Boehner, speaker of the US House of Representatives, met with a delegation of Belarusian opposition politicians in Washington on February 14.
The delegation included relatives of former presidential candidates and representatives of civil society organizations, as well as Alyaksandr Kazulin, who challenged Alyaksandr Lukashenka in the 2006 presidential election.
"It was a privilege to meet yesterday with a group of Belarusians representing family members of political opposition candidates and civil society organizations," Mr. Boehner said in a statement. "The United States has made it clear it does not view the elections of this past December as legitimate, and we continue to watch with dismay the brutal suppression of individuals trying to bring freedom, democracy and dignity to Belarus."
Mr. Boehner said that the US House of Representatives would work together with President Barack Obama's administration and the country's allies in Europe to "sustain pressure against the dictatorship in Belarus." //BelaPAN
