Visegrad Group condemns post-election crackdown in Belarus
The Austrian and German chancellors and prime ministers of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland have condemned the Belarusian government’s post-election crackdown on opponents and voiced support for the European Union`s sanctions against Minsk.
They made the statement after a summit in Bratislava, Slovakia, on Tuesday, which was organized to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Visegrad Group made up by the four Central European nations, said the BosNewsLife news agency.
The leaders said that they “are seriously concerned" by the aftermath of Belarus’ “fraudulent” presidential election held in December.
The statement was signed by Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as well as by Slovakia’s Prime Minister Iveta Radicova, Viktor Orban of Hungary, Donald Tusk of Poland and Petr Necas of the Czech Republic.
The leaders called on the Belarusian government to “immediately release all political prisoners and rehabilitate them.”
“The V4 has become a group in the EU that again and again reminds us that democracy and human rights are not self-evident,” said the German chancellor.
Ms. Merkel noted that the Visegrad countries - Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland - are themselves the best examples of the road from dictatorship to stable democracies.
The former Communist countries founded the group on February 15, 1991 in the northern Hungarian town of Visegrad. //BelaPAN
