Sannikaw hopes that "good times" will soon return to Belarus

Imprisoned opposition politician Andrey Sannikaw said in his August 29 letter to an associate of his that he was “more or less fine” and hoped that the good times would soon return to Belarus.

“I am more or less fine if the abnormality of the situation is not taken into account,” the 57-year-old former presidential candidate said in the letter to Viktar Boldzin. “It is hard in the prison, but I must continue to exist, not live, irrespective of everything.”

Mr. Sannikaw warmly recalled his meetings with associates in Mahilyow during his presidential campaign last fall. “As you rightly said, we really had good times. But I am sure that they will be soon back.”

On May 14, a judge of the Partyzanski District Court sentenced Mr. Sannikaw to five years in prison, finding him guilty of organizing "mass disorder" in connection with a post-election protest staged in the Belarusian capital city on December 19, 2010. //BelaPAN
