Lukashenka urges Prosecutor General's Office to keep pace with society's development

Alyaksandr Lukashenka on Thursday called on the Prosecutor General's Office to keep pace with society's development to be able to respond promptly and properly to present-day challenges, BelaPAN said.

Speaking at a conference in Minsk, Mr. Lukashenka said that prosecutors lacked a correct idea of their role in the country's law enforcement system following its reform, according to the government's news agency BelTA.

He accused the Prosecutor General's Office of failing to cooperate properly with other law enforcement agencies and devoting too much attention to "theories and legislative work."

Mr. Lukashenka said that many legislative proposals made by the Office were ill-considered and work on them only distracted its staff from fight against crime.

"The rights and interests of economic entities are violated nearly in all spheres of the economy," he was quoted as saying. "Arbitrary decisions by bureaucrats, restrictions on competition and unjustified preferences have not been stamped out."

Mr. Lukashenka told the Prosecutor General's Office to focus more on fighting corruption and establish closer cooperation with other government institutions.

He sounded an alarm over high staff turnover in prosecutor's offices and called for improving the recruitment and retention of staff.
