Party of Greens notes that time capsule at construction site for Belarus’ nuclear power plant was laid on Nagasaki atomic bombing anniversary

The time capsule-laying ceremony at the construction site for Belarus’ nuclear power plant project in the Astravets district, Hrodna region, was held exactly on the 67th anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki, the Belarusian Party of the Greens says in a statement, BelaPAN said.

“The 9th of August is a very significant date for understanding the essence of nuclear programs and the ‘peaceful atom’ in the history of mankind,” the statement says. “Sixty-seven years ago, on August 9, 1945, an atomic bomb called Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki.”

The party says that it is outraged at the Belarusian authorities’ attitude to the memory of the victims of atomic energy. “The very fact that a dangerous and technologically imperfect nuclear power plant will be built in Belarus, the country most affected by the Chernobyl disaster, causes surprise and indignation,” the statement says.

“The time capsule-laying ceremony on the atomic bombing anniversary is a striking manifestation of a blasphemous attitude to the memory of the victims of the ‘peaceful atom’ and refusal to learn the lessons of history,” the statement says. “The Belarusian Party of the Greens demands an immediate end to the construction of a nuclear power plant in Belarus.”
