Many people struggle to name parliamentary candidate whom they voted for
Many people interviewed by BelaPAN on a street in Minsk on Thursday struggled to remember the candidate whom they voted for in the September 18-23 elections for the House of Representatives.
"I did not vote. I did not read much about what candidates there were. It is a presidential election rather than a parliamentary vote that is interesting to me," a young man said.
"I don't vote in these elections," said a balding middle-aged man.
"I don't remember, unfortunately," said a young woman wearing aviator sunglasses.
Another young woman echoed the opinion, "I can't recollect, unfortunately."
"No, I don't remember, but I voted for a woman my age," said a middle-aged woman wearing sunglasses.
"I don't remember her name, she worked at the Technology Institute," said another woman.
"I have not voted in elections since 1996," said an elderly man in a suit and a baseball cap.
An elderly moustached man giggled and waved his arm without saying anything.
"I did not go to the polls," said a young student with braided hair. "I did not see any electioneering material, except on special boards. No one visited the institute."
"I did not vote for anyone. I did not go to the polls," said an elderly man wearing sunglasses. "Everyone had already been elected. Why waste time?"
"Unfortunately, I failed to go to the polls. I had planned to do that, but did not do that, not least because not a single candidate suited me," said a middle-aged moustached man.
"Yes, I remember, I voted for a mother of many children, I can't remember her last name. I remember that her first name is Lyudmila and that she has many children," a middle-aged woman said.
"I don’t remember the name, I remember that it was a member of the Liberal Democratic Party," said a young man.
When asked as to what the Belarusian legislature was lacking, a moustached man in a suit said, "It has everything. Everything is nice there. Our parliament is doing a great job. That's why I think it does not matter whom you vote for. I don’t remember the name, it was a girl. A young, beautiful girl with a good election platform."
The interviewees said that the Belarusian legislature lacked "brave people," "an alternative opinion," "honest people who would deal with serious matters," "a person who would be better recognized in his or her constituency," "people who never keep silent, who would take part in debates instead of voting unanimously," and "youths."
