KGB accuses opposition activist of spying
Belarus’ KGB announced Tuesday that Andrey Haydukow, a recently arrested young opposition activist, had spied for a foreign intelligence agency.
KGB spokesman Alyaksandr Antanovich said in a statement that Mr. Haydukow had “gathered and passed political and economic information on the instructions of a foreign intelligence agency,” and that he had been caught in the act of making a dead drop.
The 22-year-old Haydukow, a resident of Navapolatsk, Vitsyebsk region, and an employee of the Naftan oil refinery, is a member of an unregistered opposition party called Belarusian Christian Democracy (BCD).
As BCD activist Tatsyana Sevyarynets told BelaPAN earlier in the day, the young man was arrested in Vitsyebsk on November 8. Another BCD member, Ilya Bahdanaw, was arrested on the same day in Polatsk, but he was soon released after he pledged in writing not to disclose information about the case, whereas Mr. Haydukow was immediately taken to the KGB detention center in Minsk. “We know that a charge of high treason has been brought against him under Article 356 of the Criminal Code,” Ms. Sevyarynets said.
High treason carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison under Part One of Article 356 and up to death under Part Two.
