Young opposition activists trick-or-treating in downtown Minsk

Activists of an opposition youth group called Maladyya Demakraty went trick-or-treating in Minsk on January 6, wearing costumes of traditional Belarusian Christmas characters.

The "Christmas tour" began at about 12:30 p.m. at Kamarowski Rynak, a marketplace located at the center of the city.

Dressed up as the Christmas Goat, Wolf and other characters and displaying a large Christmas star on a staff, about 10 young people went from stall to stall, singing Belarusian-language carols and making jokes.

Both vendors and customers greeted the trick-or-treaters and gave them food and money.

"All our treats will be donated to orphanages," Maladyya Demakraty leader Aleh Korban told BelaPAN. "We have helped orphan children for several years now."

The party later visited the embassies of Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden and some other countries and met with Uladzimir Nyaklyayew, a prominent Belarusian poet who ran in the 2010 presidential race.
