Court in Minsk orders three young opposition activists to pay $233 in damages to pro-government Communists
A judge of Minsk’s Maskowski District Court has ordered three activists of an opposition youth group called Malady Front to pay a total of 1,897,000 rubels ($233) in damages to two members of the Communist Party of Belarus over an egg attack on a statue of Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin, reported the Belarus service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
The two members of the pro-government party had initially sought larger damages from Mikhail Muski, Raman Vasilyew and Pavel Syarhey. Mikalay Valovich demanded that they pay him 4,500,000 rubels in compensation and his associate wanted to be awarded 1,500,000 rubels.
The egg attack on the Lenin statue in front of the House of Government in Independence Square occurred on November 7, 2011, the anniversary of Russia’s October Revolution.
The three young men also threw eggs at activists of the Communist Party of Belarus during their rally in the square. They were arrested by plainclothesmen and subsequently sentenced to between seven and 10 days in jail. //BelaPAN
