Visiting Czech senator impressed with Belarusians

Visiting Czech Senator Tomas Jirsa said on Friday that he was impressed with the Belarusian people, as quoted by BelaPAN.

Compressing his impressions into one sentence at a news conference, he said, "These are smart and hard-working people and a beautiful land."

The lawmaker said that he and his colleagues had arrived in Minsk on August 16, meeting with representatives of Belarusian NGOs and political groups during the visit.

"Our delegation met with 20 to 30 representatives of your opposition last night. We saw that NGOs are operating and opposition parties are being created," Mr. Jirsa said.

The Czech lawmakers also traveled to Baranavichy and Vitsyebsk during the visit.

Vitsyebsk is the hometown of Marc Chagall whom we love very much. We also visited the office of the Rodny Dom organization there. In Baranavichy we laid flowers at the monument to the Czechoslovak citizens executed [by Nazis]," he said.
