German foreign minister to visit Belarus for first time in 22 years
Germany’s Vice Chancellor/Minister for Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel is expected to pay a visit to Belarus on November 17.
It will be the first visit of Germany’s foreign minister to Belarus since 1995.
According to the press office of the Belarusian foreign ministry, Mr. Gabriel will meet with Belarusian Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makey.
Messrs. Gabriel and Makey will discuss a “wide range of issues regarding Belarusian-German cooperation and development prospects of the Belarus-EU dialogue and exchange opinions on issues of the international and regional agendas,” the press office said.
After the talks, Messrs. Gabriel and Makey will speak to reporters at the Johannes Rau International Center for Education and Exchange (IBB Minsk).
Mr. Gabriel is also expected to attend the 15th Minsk Forum, which is being held in the Belarusian capital from November 16 to November 18.
Mr. Gabriel has served as Germany’s vice chancellor since December 2013 and the country’s foreign minister since January 2017.
He is a member of the Social Democratic Party. He was leader of the political party from November 2009 to March 2017.
