The walkout had been called by the Perspektyva small business association, which said that the strike also would be held in protest against last week’s jailing of five small business activists.

Perspektyva leaders also demand a meeting with Alyaksandr Lukashenka and the enactment of a law governing the small business sector.

As Perspektyva Chairman Anatol Shumchanka told BelaPAN, 50,000 to 60,000 sole entrepreneurs operating in Minsk and all of the five regional capitals were expected to walk off the job on December 19.
