Badge may be designed in commemoration of 600th anniversary of Battle of Grunwald
The Presidential Heraldic Council has received a proposal to design a badge or a medal in commemoration of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald, the Council's deputy chairman, Uladzimir Adamushka, told reporters in Minsk on Monday, as quoted by BelaPAN.
Mr. Adamushka said that the Council would consider the proposal, made by an organization called the Knights of the Grand Duchy of Litva, and expressed hope that the project would be supported and financed by the defense, culture and education ministries.
The Battle of Grunwald, which is viewed as one of the biggest in the Middle Ages, took place near the village of Grunwald (Tannenberg), now in northern Poland, on July 15, 1410. On the one side were the Teutonic Knights supported by West European mercenaries, a total of about 27,000 soldiers commanded by Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. On the other side was a 39,000-strong army of Polish King Wladyslaw Jagiello (Jahajla) and his brother, Grand Duke Vitaut of the Grand Duchy of Litva.
