Belarusian Steel Works to invest EUR17 million in environmentally friendly technologies
The management of the Belarusian Steel Works (BMZ) based in Zhlobin, Homyel region, has announced plans to invest EUR17 million in the introduction of new technologies in the next five years to reduce the company`s environmental impact, BelaPAN reports.
The BMZ has recently signed a EUR5-million contract with Finland’s Water Group that will modernize its dust removal and gas cleaning systems.
The project is designed to cut the company’s hazardous emissions into the air and enhance its treatment of waste water, the BMZ press office said on Monday.
The new technologies will allow the BMZ to produce power from steam generated from exhaust gases.
The main priority of the project is to make the plant more environmentally friendly, no economic gains are expected, the press office said.
The installation work will require the suspension of one furnace, with the management intending to carry out routine repairs at the plant and modernize the furnace. The latter project is aimed at cutting the BMZ`s electricity consumption by eight to 12 percent, and increasing its output by 15 to 20 percent.
At present, the BMZ produces more than 2.5 million tons of steel a year. The modernization of the furnace will allow it to cross the three-million benchmark, the press office added.
