Belarusian Popular Front welcomes guests into its new office

The Belarusian Popular Front welcomed public figures, foreign diplomats and reporters at its new office at number 93a Krapotkina Street in Minsk on August 25 on the occasion of the opening of an exhibition devoted to the 20th anniversary of the adoption of a bill that gave the Declaration of State Sovereignty the status of a constitutional law.

“Given the political developments in the last few months, it is significant that today’s double celebration has been marred by a sad event,” said BPF Chairman Alyaksey Yanukevich. “A provocation took place downstairs in this building a few days ago. A guard wrote a complaint in which he alleged that members of the BPF Council had beaten him up. Criminal proceedings were instituted and our associates Syarzhuk Semyanyuk, Ales Kalita and Maksim Hubarevich are suspects in the case. They run the danger of being imprisoned. In addition, this incident may be used to bring accusations against the party and attempt to take away this office from us as well. But we’ll hope for the best.”

Mr. Yanukevich also expressed hope that the new office of the BPF, just like the old one, would be home to the entire Belarusian pro-independence community. //BelaPAN
